Board Game Day

The Rizal Library, in partnership with Boardwalk of The BookBench, Strategic Trading Card Society (STACS), Gaming Library, and the Chess Club, held Board Game Day 2 last July 12, 2012 at the Rizal Library Roofdeck Study Hall. In attendance were over 200 members of the Ateneo community.

The event began with opening remarks by Dr. Vernon Totanes, Rizal Library Director. Dr. Totanes emphasized the importance of board games in facilitating learning, hence their relevance to the library: “‘What do board games have to do with the mission of the Rizal Library?’ The best answer I have for this question is to state that our mission is not limited to providing access to books, journal articles, and the Internet. We are here to facilitate learning.”Image removed.

Dr. Totanes’ short message was followed by a few words from Hans Kenner Fernandez, owner of Gaming Library. Gaming Library provided half of the board games used for Board Game Day 2, and is also the source of the acquired board games of the Rizal Library. Mr. Fernandez’ message was followed by words of welcome by Jun Angelo Sunglao, head of Boardwalk. Boardwalk is the board game department of The BookBench, the Rizal Library’s student arm.  Image removed.

Participants got the chance to play over 30 educational and entertaining board games from 12:30 to 7:30 PM. Board game newbies and enthusiasts alike played with games such as Cashflow, Black Friday, and Timeline, which allowed players to learn more about history, stock trading, and the like. Strategy games such as Risk Legacy and Game of the Generals were also available to the participants. Several chess games and card games also took place, garnering quite the audience.

This event is the second of its kind. A Board Game Day 3 will take place in the near future; details are to be announced.
