Ateneo Library of Women’s Writings

The Ateneo Library of Women’s Writings (or ALIWW) is located on the ground floor of the Old Library, next to the MDRC Section. It contains material collected from 263 women writers in Literature, Journalism and Mass Media, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Film, Medicine, and Social Science.

ALIWW houses a book collection of 659 titles and 766 volumes, as well as multimedia materials like audiotapes, videotapes, compact discs and other magnetic and digital materials. It also has over 22,000 documents consisting of manuscripts, correspondence, personal papers, and more than 1,000 photographs. The prized exhibits include the handwritten journals of Paz Marquez-Benitez (author of “Dead Stars,” the first modern short story in the Philippines) and the notebooks of Angela Manalang (author of the iconic poem, “Revolt from Hymen”), to name a few.

As the first of its kind in the Philippines, the ALIWW hopes to become a regional research center for gender studies, to promote comparative studies, and to facilitate cross-cultural exchange among Women's Studies programs in the ASEAN and throughout the world.
